Kentuck to Feature Who-heART Katrina Installation/Auction
Northport, AL – 25 new generation folk artists will offer a unique installation to be auctioned during Kentuck Festival of the Arts, October 15-16, 2005. The installation, themed “Neighbors – Helping Neighbors,” will consist of 25 individual drawings/paintings, each hanging from a clothesline along with four sections of picket fence. The fence sections consist of individually painted pickets that have been re-assembled. The fence and the 2-D art pieces will be “silent” auctioned this weekend and represent the largest collaborative, fund-raising effort undertaken by The Who-Ha Da-Da Outsider Artists’ Fellowship.
According to Paul Flack, Acting President, Who-Ha Da-Da, Inc., “Our group was profoundly effected by the recent tragedy of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. One of members’ studios overlooked the levee in the 9 th Ward. Two other founding members live and work within 45 miles of New Orleans. There was frantic activity during the storm as friends tried to get news of their well-being. Who-Ha wanted to show solidarity with the hurricanes’ victims. We had to do something.”
The Who-heART installation resembles a Christo’s projects with its large sheets of paper suspended from a clothesline that spans more than 50 feet. It is reminiscent of Tibetan prayer flags and is enclosed by gaily painted “ Americana” picket fence. Festival patrons will have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction during the two-day event. The group hopes to raise $10,000 in donations targeted for Habitat for Humanity.
Sara Anne Gibson, Executive Director, Kentuck Museum Association and Festival 2005 organizer said, “Kentuck was planning a fund-raising event to be staged during our event. Who-Ha came to us with a concept that supported our efforts and enhances our commitment to our neighbors affected by the storms. We are pleased to showcase this unique art exhibition that is supported by many of our juried and guest artists. The people attending this year’s festival will appreciate the eye-popping Sara Anne Gibson, Executive Director, Kentuck Museum Association and Festival 2005 organizer said, “Kentuck has planned was planning a fund-raising event and dedicated space to a Kentuck tree covered in Mardi gras beads. be staged during our event.
